Its not about winning, its gaining a better rank
Winning and rank don't prove anything. Usually the top 10 alliances if not more are made up of experienced players that know what they're doing. And usually only 2-3 of them survive till the end, if that. When you put pro vs. pro, they all can't survive till the end because they're competing. Some are better than others individually, some alliances are more coordinated and active. Circumstances play a large part in BD as well. For instance, in this round, today is the first time I've ever been conquered since the old client. I'm experienced, but I was overtaken from fighting multiple other active alliances. I've been here since earth 1 age 1. So even a "pro" gets taken out and won't necessarily make the top. Luckily for me, Fantasy is no where near done yet, so there's plenty of time to make a come back, but often times, a top alliance or two lose everything at the last second.
So this talk about winning or rank = pro isn't true. When you learn the game, you learn it. As Korupt said, the speed at which you learn is based on your teacher or your own willingness to learn. I never had a teacher per say, but I did pick up tips from other players as I played throughout my years.
If you want to be "pro" then I would suggest getting an experienced player to show you the ropes though. It'll be quicker. Use their methods they teach and then branch off on your own and experiment with your own.
Good luck!
