BD is full of deceiving acts, including betrayal. Well, as it is in games, most going for their own interest. This resulted in loyalty can be traded. Some join alliance just for the sake of exploiting the alliance network (u will be able to use more gates going to further distance) & protection but do nothing to protect fellow alliance members or in expanding alliance territory.
Worst of all, they sit and do nothing when the alliance is in war. The "best" is an alliance leader worked-out with hostile alliance to conquer his alliance members. Unbelievable, right?
Well, it happened! All alliance members being attacked one after another where the leader is the only person sitting there n do nothing to protect his players.
At the end, the leader is the only alliance member that was not attacked. So, u see my point? That's the worst betrayal I experience, at time when the alliance ranked 3-4 then.

It seems that these days, betrayal isn't just an option, it's the only way out. In fact, on E3, it seems like we're the only alliance that plays fair. Is it really too hard to say "we're enemies now" before you attack something? Backstabbing is what started the war between RIP and TEX, and caused PPC to get a relic. That right there, is not fun stuff.

Betrayal is usually a way to get the short term upper hand against your enemy, catch them by surprise with their pants down, taking large areas of land quickly etc. For better or for worse, it's a fairly common tactic. May as well live with it.

Still, it's the cheap way to win. I'd rather win with a fair victory, not win because we killed off all the alliances who we had treaties with but didn't like.

My worst experience that I can remember were E5 A1 where I lead NEWB, we had a couple mentors and a lot of newbs. We first got backstabbed by the rank 1 alliance when we got a relic, totally killed, I were away for the weekend and couldn't work things out =/ Then later in the round we got backstabbed by BG who took the crystals from 2 of our members, the 2 members who attacked us got online 5 and 10 minutes after the attack had hit.. or at least so they say, shame on you DoD and Godbob

My worst betrayal was when it was 60 ticks away from the end of the era, then I conquered 6 of my alliance members after kicking them while they were out in a war at the other side of the world, then got bribed by someone to give them all the relics and crystals for 15000 red tokens. I pretended to my alliance members that someone hacked my account, and then I did the same next era because they believed me.

You know... I don't think that's what KCLOH meant...
