Ticks are usually paused for a day or so at the start, so you shouldn't need to worry.

there's usually a notice so when u go to the page where u select worlds you should be able to see it.

Its a bit late to answer, but before you join a world, check the admins mass at the portal screen, it usually explians the exact time that the tick will begin going

If you make it to the world by tick one, you will most likely get a bonus from whichever admin.
