There is no math to say infantry is the best. Although if you read the wiki and other forum post they say infantry have a bonus versus vehicles and vehicles a bonus versus tanks.

One of the reasons alot of people like/liked infantry was the rebuild time. If one person loses there army and the rest of the allaince gives resources to them every 2 ticks they can be making another 60 units as opposed to every 4 for vehicle and every 6 for tanks.

Although lately alot of allaince have been using other chasis's with the largely concusive armies being created to counter infantry armies

It is in my Opinion that as people switch to tanks to counter this vehicles will come back with time to counter tanks. So the "best" chasis is really dependant on what is currently being used on the world.

Personally I like vehicles since most people do not build enough beam weapons in most fights.

Also to add to what ferret said for army type pick one type of armour unit for the allaince and build just that type of armour. So if you are building infantry build any of the infantry armour but only use one weapon type typically it is concusive this allows for the allaince to share armor loses. Otherwise your explosive armor then beam armor then concusive armor dies and those only building concusive armor recieve few loses than those that built the beam and explosive armor.
