I would not neccesarily agree with this, if you are on all tick you are able to see any conquers, ops, or wrecks that pop up during the ticks. Not to mention know exactly when someone attacks to have more time to react.

i think it ultimately comes down to your teammates. But regarding the reds, like someone else pointed out with 5-6 hours activity it's very hard to impossible to win. I've never used reds so i don't know how much you'd need to use, but i use blues and if i'm aiming to win with good activity i try to get ~1k at the beginning of the era or 200 at the beginning and some more during wars when i need to replace armor fast.

well,in a serious era i boost only workers above 950 and its enough for ending up top 10 included with activity of 8 hrs a day.

For an Era in Earth-3k reds
Era in Mars- 3k reds
Fantasy- 500-1k
Galaxy- 0

however it depends on your activity and opponents your facing.
if you're 20+ hour active, you wont need to boost, having 70+ conquers and and a few dozen crystals can easily make your production above a few k per tick so no boost required then.

however if you play against an alliance with similar power and activity as that, then you might need to boost 3k+ to keep up using worker boosts, i also keep some backup so that if my army dies, i boost and rebuild it all in a week.

1,000 blues is what i would say for the start of the era just to get that quick start otherwise you really only need tokens for energy/oil boosts during war at times
and the era on my sig was on E5 i only used 460 blues and 100 reds for that

i myself 330 blues for every era since i dont boost
and that is not absolutely required you can still do good without tokens

I know we have stated this earlier in this topic but the more active you are the less amount of tokens you need. If you are going to be on say 18-20 hours a day you could get away with not boosting. If you will be on for say 10 hours though you will most likely need to boost to keep up. Another factor is also how active and skilled your alliance is. A good active alliance will maintain a higher income by owning resource ops and taking crystals. So really it all depends on you and the people you play with.

i never buy reds & i finish top 10 every era i play... i just vote & able to boost once in 2 days i'm active 20 hrs. BD needs "ACTIVITY" not tokens.
