I may have solved your problem. This is on Windows 7 so it might be in a slightly different place but it's worth a try.
If you right click on start then go properties -> customize -> make sure the box next to 'connect to' is ticked
This basically adds/removes that option from the start menu.
Also, you should be able to access the list of wireless networks from an icon in the bottom right of the screen

But that last part, that's the thing, the last time I took in my computer that icon wasn't there anymore.
