If that man who calls himself a president shuts down the internet, I'm moving back to japan!

Thanks for bumping this topic. I thought you guys should know what our government is up to on the front of internet legislation. Last week a bill called "Combating Online Infringement Act" hit the floor of the Senate. This bill is extremely dangerous and gives government powers to shut down and censor any website they deem to be infringement on copyrights. This bill can be seen and reviewed by going HERE.

Again, and keeping par with all proposed legislation on internet matters by the federal govt., language is very open-ended and can be interpreted in broad manner and also begs the question of how much we the people really trust legislators and our government to regulate such things. Especially when we the people are losing faith and for good reason in who our government really serves! It is painfully obvious to anyone whose head is not buried in the sand that our government no longer serves the people, but serves private corporate interests who lobby them and slip large amounts of money into their campaign and party accounts behind the scenes.

These trends are very disturbing. The last means we have to get "real news" is the internet. What if someone shows an image of Coca-Cola in the background of a pic on a news story that our government decides it does not want you to read on some independent news site? Should we allow them the means to totally shut down that website for copyright infringement? Should BattleDawn be shut down for me mentioning a copyrighted logo? Should we be shut down because our players like to name themselves after copyrighted products? This may seem far fetched because publicly, the people who propose this bill state that "a website must be determined to be dedicated to counterfeiting and infringing activities" in order to be affected and blacklisted by this law. But then you have to ask yourself how much you trust the people who are going to be the ones who enforce it.

Personally, I see our government trying to take freedoms from us at every turn these days. Especially when it comes to the internet. I see pass after pass of attempts being made by the government to find any possibly way to get their feet wet in regulating the internet in some way! I see mainstream media peddling fear to the masses to make it so that the people are so afraid that they willingly relinquish their rights and freedoms so they can feel "safe". Im sorry, but I am not, nor have I ever been so afraid of some guy hiding in a cave in Afghanistan to relinquish ANY of my freedoms! You all should be wary of anyone who tells you that you should!

If you live in the united states, you need to get on Google, and find your state's senator's contacts and email him every day letting him know how you feel about it!

USA calls him president. get over it. im still surprised that some people were dumb enough to call for a seccesion, seriously, learn to democracy.

I'm to busy to read all of this, but i would just like to point out that the pirate bay were not taken down, they first lost the case, but they won in the Swedish supreme court, and the site is still there

but i would think Seths long post would get more notice then it did xD
I'll read it and comment it later

actually they did shut down pirate bay, its just that pirate bay has more servers in russia/elsewhere. that first case shows that piracy is not invulnerable and probably hints that those in USA could do it too.

try getting an atheist into office and youll find that democracy is still all about perception. if it looks good, that'll do. i think they voted different into office, 8 years of bush tipped the scales.

i still dont know why you think that is fail democracy, if the population is full of idiots, then the person who appeals to idiocy will get office. democracy. get used to it. it has its flaws.

i dought many they will vote for that to happen i dought he will get through the next election but also he would need more protection due to exactly that the fact that everyone would hate him for shutting the enternet down besides for programs like that theres normaly a dictator

i dought there would be any good that came from him having that much power

Obama gets the ability to shutdown the internet.
