In the short term this is a bad move. Americans have alot of firearms and it would be impossible to force everybody to hand in all of their guns. It just means guns will be in more of "the wrong hands" than good ones.

But in the long term, It does make sense from a governments perspective. They've got to start sometime. People just won't be happy if it happens in their lifetime.

It's a bad move in the long term as well, the second amendment was added as a last line of defense for the people, You have the right to organize a well regulated militia force, outlaw that and the people, in combination with the Patriot Act will now be able to be wiped off the face of the planet without being able to resist and without being able to be known.

I know, most people think that thinking like this is radical, but its better to think radically than it is to just let it pass then have it used against you later, all we are is giving the government more powers that could be used to turn the free united states into a oligarchy dictatorship (which it almost is in some cases.)

-.-

Also, what ever happened to the people's rule over this country? This is what the government wants and I personally find it ridiculous that they completely - Ignorantly ignore the majority's opinion.

The government was not founded in this country as a program to run our lives, it was created as an organization to protect our freedoms which in present day they are intruding on the same freedoms that millions have died for.

What is this rubbish about? All the other half arsed modern nations put the ban on guns hundreds of years ago.

Your constitution is in no way an argument against/for any laws. Its a central law made many many years ago back then made to give and protect certain rights and duties. It's vastly outdated and adjusting it won't make the world go down or take away your freedom.

Fact is, you're giving people who have absolutely no business judging or shooting people guns. You're giving people who are not in any way educated in recognizing real danger, citizens arrest, medical care or anything like that a weapon to kill someone else. You're putting the life's of others in the hands of a silly amendment because a guy you like who's been long since dead wrote it?

You want to trust some rednecks with a gun to shoot you down if you hit on their daughter? :| or if you come on their land? Because obviously trespassing is a proper crime for death penalty without court?

This law is antique, other countries and research already proof it's safer without it. Die, NRA, die!

It isn't for these reasons people use guns in the US. If they did, most people would be dead :D Guns are for self defence and they are a deterrent. Almost 200 or 250 million people have guns. God knows how many criminals there are and all of them would have guns. If the government outlaws guns, wouldn't these guys get an upper hand over the civilian population? Secondly, in case you need to defend yourself, having a gun on you might help in a lot of cases. There are a lot of countries, well atleast India, where people as old as 70 years old, want guns to protect themselves. They have openly voiced that concern, so its not like other societies dont want guns. Its just that they aren't allowed to possess any.

Lastly, in the US, having guns is a part of the culture and the mindset. People in the US consider themselves more free, unique etc because they are allowed to possess weapons, which is not possible in other countries. This feeling is quite deep rooted, and is not something you can take away in a day. Its been around for 200 odd years. Now outlawing something the people as a whole have come to love, is against democracy. The government should be FOR the people and by the people, not otherwise.

Havent and wont bother reading through all of it... I just need 2 say this: if the worries is that the Americans might be unprepared for WWIII if they dont have guns... that's just absurd. Gun or no gun, if the American civvies have to face war, they wouldnt be able 2 do much anyways. Other than getting in the way of the regular soldiers. A simple gun won't protect an untrained civilian to face even more than a single enemy, much less a soldier trained for combat.

There are absolutely no worries about WW3 and guns. Some people just don't like when their trusted presidents try to deliberately violate the constitution. This isn't the 18th century, we don't need guns to defend ourselves on a huge scale. Although, I can see how guns would be essential to some citizens safety in certain places and situations. If you lived in southern Texas, near the border, wouldn't you want a gun? I'm not talking about going crazy and shooting immigrants, but what about the druglords and such? And although it's so unlikely to the point where it's almost impossible, if America was to be invaded in any way, shape or form, I think 290 million armed people would definitely help. It doesn't matter that they're untrained or possibly out of shape or old, it's the sheer number that matters. Especially when you consider the biggest countries in the world today (China, Russia, America itself, etc.) only have around 800,000 to 1,500,000 infantry, or foot soldiers, in their army. 290 million untrained people vs. 1,000,000 trained people, who would win?

You are guys are mistaken. First of all, possessing a weapon is purely a deterrent and for self defence. If your government, or the person elected from your constituency isn't doing his job, does not mean you can pull a gun on him. That kind of a situation will arise only if there is civil war.

That will NEVER happen. Also, why are we talking about invasions? That will NEVER happen either.

EVEN if the country was invaded by say China, 290 million people with guns, wont be able to do anything. You would have air raids, trained commandos fighting you, and they'd drop you in a second. So even if you had some guns, its best if you stayed inside. The best thing in such a case, would be to form a rebel militia, armed with whatever weapons you have, and whatever you can steal and actually use guerrilla tactics. Civilians wont be able to fight troops. Period. Not even put up a resistance. That will only end in a more brutal death.

The only country that would actually be able to kind of make a difference, or be a pain, is Israel. Their population is all military trained - and top of the line training. Even their civilians wont be able to do much, but still. That is not the case with the US.

That's the problem Dylan. (Is that your real name?)

Anyways, that's the problem. People that want to hurt others or people that kill others to advance their goals (think gangs, mafias, drug lords, etc.) will find a way to get guns. They have means of getting things that regular people wouldn't dream of having. But when those people find guns, the normal people won't have guns because of this bill. So they can't defend themselves. You see the problem right?
