I attempted the damage experiment a few rounds ago on F5. Whilst it is effective in simulators and seems better than range due to the recent buff to damage units damage, I found that the losses of armor weighed tremendously out of my favor.
In a straight up fight, WITH NO XP and even squad counts, damage out performs range. BUT in any fight where you outnumber your opponent, range minimizes losses of armor, thus allowing you to keep your squads intact longer.
The idea being that if the fight goes into 3 rounds, damage is a cheaper, more efficient alternative to range. However if the fight lasts 1-2 rounds, you are simply wasting armor units by using damage.
When confronting relics or garrisons with damage as your primary attack force, you get slaughtered by the admins damage units (which could otherwise die before they can harm you too much when using range).
And really, how often are you pushing for a "straight up fight" I always try to outnumber squads rather heftily and I would suggest you do the same.
Oh and if you are an xp whore like myself : Range 4 range units > Range 3 Damage units.
